Officers Dinner held in Hartford Wardroom

Lawrence Jones, who normally interprets a naval surgeon for Port Columbus events, hosted a period style Christmas dinner during the museum's Victorian Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 6. Several museum staffers and living history volunteers participated in the event, pictured here. It was the first time that the area had actually been used for a formal meal. After dinner, the group retired to the deck of the USS Water Witch, now under construction for some fresh air and cigars.

Huge Cannon Ball now on exhibit

For the first time, a huge 15-inch diameter cannon ball from the Civil War is going on display at Port Columbus, just in time for Thanksgiving. The museum is open all day on Thanksgiving Day, and then on throughout the weekend. Port Columbus is closed only one day per year, Christmas Day.
This cannon ball weighs 455 pounds and fired in a cannon with a range of 2100 yards fired with 35 pounds of gunpowder. Many of the guns which fired these rounds were in "Monitor" class ironclad ships which had not only a 15 inch gun, but also an 11-inch cannon as well.

One visitor commented that just being in the presence of the huge iron ball gave him the "chills."
