Nope, the Civil War Navies. In conjunction with National Inventors’ Month, Port Columbus presents a look at inventions and technological advancements in navies both North and South during the Civil War.
We’ll also take a special look at the Navy Yard here in Columbus and the engineering practiced there by Horace King and others.
1:30 p.m. – Inventing a New Navy – An overview of the technological advances in the navies of the Civil War.
2:30 p.m. – Columbus Navy Yard Technology – A look at Civil War Naval technology as practiced here in Columbus, GA, with a special focus on the CSS Jackson.
3:30 – Bridging Deep South Rivers - A special screening of Horace: The Bridge Builder King, about the Chattahoochee Valley’s resident engineer genius, the former slave Horace King. In conjunction with the film, Tom Lenard, the documentary’s director, and Thomas French, Jr., co-author of the definitive Horace King biography, will give a presentation on Horace King’s work at the Columbus Naval Yard.
