Black In Blue: African Americans in the Civil War Navies

10Feb2012

African American Sailor from USS WabashFebruary 18, 2012: 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Kicking off our 2012 public programming is our annual Black History Month event, Black In Blue. This event examines the personal stories of African Americans serving in or affected by the Navies of the Civil War.

This year’s presentation focuses on: Moses Dallas, a Savannah area slave pilot hired for the raid on the USS Water Witch; Harriet Dallas, a “free woman of color” and widow of Moses Dallas; and Susie King Taylor, a nurse for the Union forces on the Georgia Coast. Each of these fascinating figures will be portrayed by local actors in first-person museum theatre performances, giving guests a unique view of their experiences and stories during the Civil War.

In addition, a special tour of the Museum’s galleries will highlight the stories of the African American experience in both the Union and Confederate Navies.

A special school and group tour program is available for booking during the week of 2/13-17 as well. Contact the Museum for more information.

One Response to “Black In Blue: African Americans in the Civil War Navies”

  1. Wish I could find a Black Civil War Sailor for my Black History Program for 2013. It would be surprising and unique as you can’t find one anywhere on the internet.
