Finding Your Civil War Ancestors: Genealogy with Dr. Joe Coley
6-8 p.m. at the National Civil War Naval Museum
Genealogy combines aspects of research, educated guess and, in many cases…luck. One of the most interesting periods of study in American history is The Civil War. It is estimated that between 3.5 and 4 million men (and women) fought or had some role in The American Civil War, and the actual number is likely much higher.
Virtually every race and ethnic group participated in the war (including over 250 documented female soldiers). In general, if you had a male ancestor who was between 18 and 45 between 1861-1865 it is very likely they served in the military. Specifically for Southerners, the age range is 15-65. The complexity of Civil War military genealogy makes it challenging and fun.
Come share an informative program on how you can find your Civil War ancestor and learn about your family’s role in this pivotal event in American history.
Dr. Joe Coley is a contributing writer to Civil War Times Magazine, Vietnam Magazine and has over 30 years experience assisting people in finding their Civil War ancestors.
