Summer School of the Sailor Camp

"Time Travel" at Naval Museum Summer Camp
    Level 1 – June 16-20 2008

    Level 2 – June 23-27 2008

    Level 3 – July 14-18 2008

    Each camp is from 9am-1pm.
Cost is $125 per student ages 9-13 and that includes a sailor shirt, hat and lunch daily. Over the course of the week, students will be instructed on various aspects of sailor life to include cutlass drill, musket drill, signal flags, cannon drill, boat drill and much more.

Time travel to the middle 1800’s awaits children who sign up for the School of the Sailor summer day camp at the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus. Skills of Civil War era sailors will be taught including cutlass and musket drill, flag signaling, period foodways, sailor songs and much more. For advanced sessions, there is even a naval archeology session.

"We will have four camps this summer with three different levels," said Port Columbus Education and Programs Director Matt Young. "Our level one recruits will get all the basics, including a little bit of history," said Young. Children in the upper levels will get training in additional skills such as medical practices of naval surgeons and will be taken on boat tours of Columbus on the Chattahoochee River.
