2012: October 20, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
November – December – Victorian Christmas
Our modern American image of Santa Claus originated with a drawing by prominent political cartoonist Thomas Nast. Nast’s 1863 image depicted a jolly, plump, bearded man delivering gifts to Union troops at their encampment, wearing a fur-trimmed suit of patriotic stars and stripes.
Victorian Christmas now encompasses two weekends. The first, Thanksgiving Weekend, will include a museum theatre program telling the stories of sailors examining the Victorian roots of our modern Christmas traditions. There will also be Victorian-era carolers, refreshments, and shopping in the museum store.
The second weekend will be the traditional open house, the first weekend in December as always. Our Civil War-era Santa will be on hand for visits and photos (professional photo packages are available for purchase). There will also be Victorian-er carolers, refreshments, a Victorian Vaudeville show and shopping in the museum store.. At the conclusion of the day, Santa will fire the original Civil War cannon from the CSS Jackson!
Both weekends offer guests a unique opportunity to see the museum decorated in traditional Victorian style, enjoy hospitality and snacks from local restaurants, and unique gift shopping opportunities in the Museum store.
