Performer Highlight : Mary Read / Michelle Murillo
The 2010 The Southern Pirate Festival will feature boatloads of entertainment, from music to fire jugging. We’ll be highlighting some of the acts and groups here as we near the event. This time, it’s Michelle Murillo, who portrays Mary Read.
Mary Read took being a woman in a man’s world to a whole new level as one of the most notorious woman pirates in history. She lived her life in the clothes and careers of men, including going down in history as a pirate who sailed under the flag of Calico Jack Rackham. She was known as a cutthroat by friends and referred to as a ‘Hellcat’ by men who came against her in battle.
Michelle Murillo is a Central Florida performer who first took on the character when a festival was in need of a Mary. But the more she studied Mary’s life, the more she became enthralled with this historical figure.
Since that first ‘fill-in’ portrayal she has spent years studying Mary, fascinated by both the inner and outer strength she had to take on the life of a man in the early 1700s. She has also walked in Mary’s footsteps down the brick streets of Port Royal, Jamaica and looked from her hideout in Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos.
Michelle will be bringing her portrayal of Mary Read to the Southern Pirate Festival Saturday, Oct. 23. Watch this page for more upcoming acts, and come to The Southern Pirate Festival to see them all!

Pirate Facts : Buccaneers
The meaning of the word buccaneer refers to what some pirates ate rather than something more debonair. Wild cattle and pigs were plentiful on Spanish-owned islands in the Caribbean. Outcasts in the region hunted these animals and cooked them over a pit called a boucan. Had the Spanish not forced them from the island, and had the buccaneers not attacked local ships, buccaneers might still be best known for cooking meat.

Perfomer Highlight : Bilgemunky
The 2010 The Southern Pirate Festival will feature boatloads of entertainment, from music to fire jugging. We’ll be highlighting some of the acts and groups here as we near the event. This time, it’s DJ Bilgemunky!
Bilgemunky has been a growing fixture within the pirate scene since 2003 when he first began sharing pirate news, reviews, and commentary on Bilgemunky.com. From its humble beginnings of just a few reviews and some odd satire, Bilgemunky.com has grown into what’s possibly the largest single online database of pirate movies, books, clothing, music – and of course rum.
More recently Bilge has expanded his online pirate empire to include Bilgemunky Radio, a weekly streaming radio show featuring a vast selection of independent pirate-core music ranging from sea shanties to rock, rap, punk, metal, and more. Also available via iTunes, Bilgemunky Radio strives with each episode to provide pirate-core artists a vehicle to promote their work, and also as to expand the pirate-core audience by introducing this fantastic genre to the uninitiated.
Bilgemunky will be performing during both the Festival and the Ball.

Pirate Facts: Birth of Piracy
Piracy has been around since ships first set out on the sea. Piratical problems in Ancient Greece and Rome are well documented and the Vikings were well known to raid many settlements. This all may give piracy a legitimate shot at being the world’s “Second Oldest Profession.”
