The 2011 Southern Pirate Festival kicks off today and runs 10-5 both Saturday and Sunday. This year’s festival is packed with activities, including returning crowd favorites from last year.

Pirates from across the country are attending, as well as vendors from several states offering piratical wares and food. Don’t have a costume? No problem – they’ll help you put one together (besides, everyone is welcome, costumed or not!)

Piracy has been around since ships first set out on the sea. Piratical problems in Ancient Greece and Rome are well documented and the Vikings were well known to raid many settlements. This all may give piracy a legitimate shot at being the world’s “Second Oldest Profession.”
