National Civil War Naval Museum Tours & Programs
Come aboard and get the little known Navy view of the Civil War. Focusing on the themes of Technology, Commerce, Blockade, Amphibious Operations and River Campaigns, you’ll get the stories of Sailors, Soldiers, Slaves and Civilians as affected by the Civil War Navies, North and South. Your group can get the experience through the Tours, Programs and Outreach outlined below.

Tours
All Options: 20 person minimum. Student tours require a 1:10 ratio of chaperones to students. Chaperones pay tour admission and must remain with the tour group. Teachers and Bus Drivers admitted free.
Option 1 – $5 – Self-Guided – Tour time: 1 hour minimum recommended – Using our Self-guide Brochures students and groups can move at their own pace through our one of a kind facility, in which is exhibited the nation’s most unique collection of Civil War navy related material. Smart Phone Audio Tour enhancements are available as part of Self-Guided tours at no extra cost.
Option 2 – $6 – With Interpreter – Tour time: 1 hour 15 min. minimum recommended – Beginning in the Center Gallery a Museum Interpreter will guide students/groups through our one of a kind 40,000 sq ft facility, answering questions and giving context to complement the exhibits. The tour will make use of the museum’s 60 foot long mural of Civil War ships in their operational environment before moving on to exhibits of the nation’s most unique collection of Civil War navy related material.
Option 3 – $7 – With Uniformed Interpreter: Sailor’s Life – Uniformed Sailor, Civil War Navy Weapons and Daily Life Program – Tour time: 1 hour 30 min. minimum recommended – A Living History Interpreter in Civil War Sailor uniform will show a range of weapons, clothing & musical instruments used aboard Civil War ships. He will also use the museum’s famous 60 foot long mural of Civil War ships to show the most famous types used during the war, from sailing ships to submarines and ironclads. The sailor will guide the group through the museum’s exhibits of the nation’s most unique collection of Civil War navy related material.
Option 4 – $7 – One Ship, Two Navies; Tours of the USS/CSS Water Witch – Tour time: 1 hour 30 min. minimum recommended – A Living History Interpreter in Civil War Sailor uniform will take groups aboard Port Columbus’ award winning outdoor replica of the Water Witch (a ship that served in both the Union and Confederate navies) telling the surprising and dramatic story of its service with the USN and capture by the CSN. The tour will show the range of weapons used and uniforms worn by both sides, as well as daily life aboard ship and includes a hands-on sword drill activity.
Option 5 – $7 – Black in Blue; African-Americans & Civil War Navies Tour: 1 hour 15 min. – Available February 13-17 for Black History Month or for general booking throughout the year. Interpretive Tours relating the African American Naval experience as illustrated in our exhibits, highlighting the stories of African American Nurses, Pilots, Sailors and Engineers.

Programs
All Options: 25 person minimum. 2 week advance booking required. Your group takes a Self-guided tour after the presentation. Student tours require a 1:10 ratio of chaperones to students. Chaperones pay tour admission and must remain with the tour group. Teachers and Bus Drivers admitted free.
Program 1 – $8 – African-American Programming – Program time including Self Guided Tour: 1 hour 15 min. – Available February 13-17 for Black History Month or for general booking throughout the year – A variety of First Person Living History stories highlighting the Navy experience of African American Nurses, Pilots, Sailors and Engineers.
Program 2 – $8 – Medical Mysteries Program – Program time including Self Guided Tour: 1 hour 15 min. – An up-close look at medical practice in Civil War Navies, including the first US Navy Nurses and Hospital ships. Students will get hands-on experience with reproduction equipment.
Outreach
All Options: In Muscogee County, $2 per student, 25 student minimum. Outside Muscogee County, $2 per student plus roundtrip transportation costs, 25 student minimum. Contact the Museum to see if your location is available for outreach programs. Program length 45 minutes.
Outreach 1 – The Sailor’s Life – Uniformed Sailor, Civil War Navy Weapons and Daily Life Program – A uniformed Sailor visits your class with a variety of reproduction equipment to tell the story of daily life in the Navy.
Outreach 2 – The Good Doctor – Ship’s Doctor and Medical Practice Program – A Naval Doctor visits your class and uses reproduction equipment to demonstrate medical care in the Civil War Navies.
